Castles of Darkness
Also known as: Castles Of Darkness
Publisher: The Logical Choice · Developer: Michael J. Cashen
Castles of Darkness is an early Castles of Darkness graphic adventure by Michael Cashen for the Apple II. The story centers on the evil wizard Grimnacht, whose curse has plunged the land into eternal darkness after seizing two castles and possibly capturing a princess. Players must uncover and destroy the source of his power to restore light. Developed over six months, the game pushed technical limits of early systems, using clever graphics compression to fit rich content onto a 5.25-inch floppy. Built partly with tools created by Steve Wozniak, Cashen even modified Apple's DOS to prevent copying. Released in 1981, it gained attention after Softalk magazine praised it as the first adventure game with animation, boosting sales and securing its place in early computer gaming history.
