Fathom's 40 is a World War II submarine simulation that puts the player in command of a German Mark XXI U-Boat during the final years of the war. Blending strategic map-based gameplay with tactical combat, the player must patrol Allied shipping lanes, locate convoys, sink freighters and tankers, evade destroyers and depth charges, and safely return to Brest, France. Tactical play involves managing speed, depth, engines, batteries, torpedoes, and periscope use while monitoring sonar displays and avoiding detection. Enemy escorts vary in weaponry and sonar capabilities, while damage to the submarine can cripple key systems and force repairs between missions. Each game features three patrols with limited torpedoes, multiple difficulty levels, automatic scoring, and a final ranking based on tonnage sunk and mission success.
