Gene Machine is an educational program that explores the fundamentals of DNA and genetic engineering. Developed in 1983 by Australian geneticist and university professor Judith Kinnear, it provided students with an early interactive look at molecular biology. The program allows users to build double-stranded DNA, transcribe mRNA from DNA, examine the genetic code, and learn about the structure and function of human DNA. Kinnear was a pioneer in educational software, creating several science-focused programs, including CATLAB, which simulated cat coat-color inheritance through crossbreeding, and BIRDBREED, a budgerigar breeding simulation based on genetic color inheritance. While all of her programs were designed to make genetics more accessible to students, Gene Machine became her most acclaimed work, earning multiple educational awards in the United States and recognition from educators and scientists alike.
