Goblins
Publisher: Highlands Computer Services · Developer: Antonson Labs
The fourth adventure game from Highlands Computer Services, and the only one not written by Butch Greathouse and Garry Rheinhardt. Set in Goblin Country, Goblins challenges players to collect fourteen treasures and return them to the treehouse before sunset while avoiding the creatures that roam the land under King Gobnarsk II's strict “no loitering” rule. Similar to Mystery House, the game combines black-and-white illustrated scenes with a text parser for movement and commands. Players use simple inputs like compass directions, GET, SCORE, and INVEN to interact with the world. Unique animated sequences help the game stand out, including goblins appearing unexpectedly and dramatic death scenes. The game also features a move limit tied to the setting sun, increasing danger as night approaches. Along the way, players discover magical spells that aid progress, including one that instantly transports collected items back to the treehouse, reducing the need for repeated travel.
