Northern Fleet
Publisher: Simulations Canada · Developer: W. J. Nichols, Steve Newberg, James Baker
Northern Fleet is a strategic naval wargame that simulates a hypothetical Soviet invasion of the Nordic countries in 1996. One or two players command the major naval and naval air forces of either NATO or the Soviet Union, with a computer opponent available for solo play. Acting as a theater commander, players organize task forces, assign missions, direct fleet movements, and react to evolving battlefield events. Gameplay is divided into three phases: managing and reorganizing task forces, issuing movement and support orders, and reviewing intelligence reports before launching attacks. Played entirely through text, the game includes a board and counters for tracking unit positions. Time advances in 8-hour turns beginning on April 1, 1996. As combat intensifies, tensions can escalate to global nuclear war, ending the game immediately. Otherwise, the conflict concludes after 35 turns with a ceasefire, and both sides are scored based on the effectiveness of their command decisions.
