The Black Sage is a humorous fantasy RPG that combines multiple-choice adventure gameplay with character development and combat. Trapped inside the Black Sage's castle, the player must explore 36 interconnected rooms in search of a way to escape. Before beginning, players generate a character and equip weapons, armor, shields, and magical spells. Each room presents a unique encounter with several choices, ranging from clever solutions to instant death. Success often depends on character attributes, while some situations lead to turn-based combat where equipment and statistics determine survival. As players explore, they can gain gold, better gear, and improved abilities. The castle's layout remains fixed, allowing strategic exploration and multiple routes to freedom, including magical and unconventional escapes. Players may even encounter the mysterious Black Sage himself. Escaped characters can be saved for use in planned but unreleased future adventures.
