The Prisoner is an unconventional Apple II adventure inspired by the 1960s TV series of the same name. You play a former intelligence agent who, after mysteriously resigning, is kidnapped and taken to a strange island community designed to break his will. The island's authorities use manipulation, deception, and psychological pressure to uncover the secret reason for his resignation, represented by a hidden code number. Every character, location, and apparent escape route may be part of an elaborate trap, forcing players to question reality and their own assumptions. The game frequently breaks the fourth wall, blurring the line between player and protagonist. Renowned for its surreal storytelling and themes of individuality versus control, The Prisoner was reportedly even used as a training tool by the CIA.
