A diferencia de adaptaciones posteriores que se limitan al año 1984, el juego te permite jugar primero en el futuro (2029), donde el objetivo principal de Kyle Reese es infiltrarse en una base de Skynet y llegar a la máquina del tiempo. A partir de ahí, la acción se traslada a Los Ángeles de 1984. Allí deberás evitar a la policía (que no puede ser eliminada), huir de los ataques del Terminator en la comisaría y, finalmente, enfrentarte a él en una fábrica industrial para destruirlo aplastándolo con maquinaria pesada.
