Darkland is a horizontal-scrolling action game. It was originally planned for the Commodore Amiga as well but that version was cancelled, leaving the Atari ST version as exclusive. The game takes place on a technologically advanced planet that has fallen into ruin due to black crystals emitting negative waves. These crystals caused life forms to mutate into monsters. You are a soldier chosen by a council to venture into the prohibited zone, collect various crystals and destroy them to save the civilization. You are wearing a white crystal armor that protects you from the negative waves and a loyal drone/droid that follows you and performs specialized tasks. The most unique feature is the orb-like droid that accompanies you. You can use it strategically to interact with the environment or help in combat. It is primarily a Run and Gun style shooter. Each enemy type reportedly requires a specific technique or timing to defeat, adding a slight puzzle element to the action.
