The player character is a reporter for the newspaper The Washington Representative. Veronica Ashcroft-Wellman, a longtime friend and wealthy socialite, has sent an invitation to Ashcroft's annual Halloween ball, where Maryland's upper-class gentry mingle, network and congratulate each other on their wealth. The newspaper's editor suggests you cover the party. Since it is a costume party, the player character dons a rented cowboy costume and heads to the party. Many of the attendees wear masks, making it difficult to identify them. Shortly after the party begins, however, Veronica is found dead, strangled with a very familiar-looking lasso, with a ball from the costume belt placed near her body for good measure. But the player hid the rope in the closet earlier, and the ball has disappeared from the back of the belt. Anyone could have taken them! However, the player is the prime suspect in Veronica's murder. It will take a lot of investigation to identify the real murderer.
