In Total Recall, players control Quaid and battle through 7 levels on Earth and Mars. The game alternates between platforming and driving levels. In these levels, Quaid must battle guards and find the exit. The player can duck to avoid bullets and fight back with captured weapons and Schwarzenegger's powerful fists. In the first level, the player must locate objects to open the exit while in a later level, the player alternates between Quaid and the resistance fighter Melina to solve a puzzle. The driving levels are high-speed side-scrolling races, where the player's vehicle moves at a fixed speed. The player must dodge passing vehicles or destroy them with their weapons. If they survive to the end, they must defeat a mobile boss to complete the level. Cutscenes appear between some levels, recounting the film's plot and setting the stage for the next scene.
