In 1829, the Esmeralda, a freighter carrying gold, sank to the bottom of the ocean. In 1927, a treasure hunter named Howard Kelp donned a diving suit and set out to search for gold bars in the wreck. Treasure Trap is an isometric action game similar to Head Over Heels but with a less abstract theme. The player guides the diver through a series of 100 rooms where the main objective is to collect gold. The main danger encountered is the marine life that occupies the vacant ship. The character has no weapons, but carries a limited number of Smart Fish, trained piranhas that attack and destroy all enemies in the room. Since the player starts with 2 fish and only receives a new one for every 80 gold bars collected, they must generally avoid enemies by staying at a distance or jumping over them. Stacking boxes and other objects prevents wildlife from reaching the character (and also allows them to access high places).
