Black Belt attempts to accurately simulate Taekwon-Do sparring matches and closely follows standard sparring rules. Sparring matches allow computer opponents of varying difficulty levels, which affect the opponent's speed, fatigue, form and intelligence. Certain moves are only allowed to players with sufficient skill. Players can choose between 9 different kicks, 3 different punches and blocks and move in 4 cardinal directions. The gameplay allows for a roster of multiple characters. As the player achieves a higher belt rank by defeating more experienced opponents. For each successful attack or block the player receives one point. Players can receive warnings when they leave the mat, face the opponent, make an illegal shot, or stall play. A player loses a point for every 2 warnings and is disqualified if he receives 6 warnings.
