Imperium Romanum II places the player in the tumultuous late 4th and 5th centuries AD, during the division of the Roman Empire into the Eastern and Western Empires. As one of the most capable generals of the East, the player is sent to Ravenna to prevent the Western Empire from collapsing. The mission involves holding back Germanic tribes, navigating political intrigues, and gaining the trust of the Western Roman Emperor, who views the influence of the East with suspicion. At the same time, the player has the opportunity to pursue a unique career and potentially become a key figure in uniting the two empires. Strategy, diplomacy, and military skill are crucial to saving the faltering West and securing personal power.
