"John Bend Detective" begins on the morning of June 15, when the detective receives a telegram from the Secret Service. He is instructed to report immediately to headquarters to see Mr. "Q," his highest-ranking superior. After a cup of jet-black coffee without sugar, John Bend heads to the Secret Service headquarters. The guard at the entrance is visibly startled as John Bend screeches into the narrow driveway.
