Swagger is a modern form of the ancient guessing game played by the Incas of Peru. They would wander through the forests and mountain passages of Peru looking for objects of special interest. When one of them saw something unique, he would say, 'I see a Wild ass'. This was the signal to the others to start guessing what he really saw, since wild asses were indeed rare in Peru. Each in turn would make their wild ass guess, and they would be guided to the prize by the response 'hotter' when the guess was closer than the last oneand 'colder' when it was farther away. A guess was called a WAG (Wild Ass Guess) from which our word 'wagger' is derived.
