Thunderground puts you in a battle against six nuclear core bases scattered across the surface of a planet. To reach them, you must dig underground tunnels while avoiding patrols of Core Ranger tanks. White Sentry tanks move only through existing passages and fire only when they have a clear line of sight, while blue Digger tanks carve out their own tunnels to pursue you. Another Sentry tank at the bottom of the screen threatens your reserve tanks – if it reaches them before you destroy all six bases, you lose a life. Collecting hidden enemy supplies grants bonus points. Later levels raise the challenge by showing only one base at a time or by removing the dirt entirely, allowing tanks to chase you immediately. The game is an unofficial homebrew conversion of the Atari 2600 classic.
