In Atomic Robo-Kid, the player controls a laser-powered robot that can evolve by collecting bonuses left behind by certain enemies. Each new weapon obtained is added to the weapons available, and the player can select a weapon at any time. Four different weapons can be collected. The robot shoots in the direction of travel, to the right or left of the screen. In levels with multi-directional scrolling, the shot remains horizontal. The levels are fairly short but plentiful.
