This game marks the debut of Goemon's giant robot Impact and of the clockwork ninja Sasuke as a playable character (who previously debuted in The Legend of the Mystical Ninja as a boss), both of which would become staples in following titles from the series. The game is mainly a 2D platformer and shares some similarities to Super Mario World, although it is shorter and arguably much more difficult.
