There is a mysterious island called Angel Island, which holds a mysterious precious stone: the Master Emerald. It is not known for sure what its powers are, but it is known that a lot of energy can be obtained from it. It is different from the Chaos Emeralds. Dr. Robotnik was not at all pleased with the defeat of his Death Egg in Sonic 2, and so the evil scientist, upon learning of the existence of this special emerald, decides to get it: it is all he needs to reactivate the Death Egg and definitively defeat Sonic and dominate the world.
