In a psychiatric hospital, patient after patient begins to die in mysterious circumstances. A young nurse, Ikuko Matsuda, doubts that the deaths are natural. One day, Ikuko disappears, leaving behind a bloodstained credit card. Her fiancé, Katsuyoshi Yamazaki, ventures into the hospital to try and unravel the mystery. The Byoin (The Hospital) is an adventure game consisting mainly of text, with a few anime-style black and white drawings or digitised photos for certain locations and events. It is not a text adventure game, as there is no text input. The player selects commands from the menu to the left of the main text. These commands mainly comprise detailed examination options.
